Bobby Hopkins was born in New Orleans and has lived on Mercer Island since 1973. His mother taught physical education on Mercer Island, and his father, Bob Hopkins Sr., played in the NBA and served as an assistant coach for the Seattle SuperSonics and the New York Knicks. The family moved to Mercer Island largely because Bobby’s cousin on his father’s side, the legendary Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics—winner of 11 NBA championships—accepted the head coaching position with the Seattle SuperSonics. Bobby has three older sisters: Lynnetta, Marilyn, and Debbie. He has a 13-year-old son named Kellen, who loves basketball. Bobby played high school basketball for Mercer Island and graduated in 1989. He went on to play college basketball at Xavier University of New Orleans and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Maryland. After college, he played professional basketball in Athens, Greece, for three years and in Tokyo, Japan, for six years. When his playing career ended, Bobby began coaching. He served as an assistant coach at Merrell High School, winning state championships in 1997 and 1999. He then spent four years as an assistant coach at Sammamish High School before moving to Bellevue High School, where he has coached for over 20 years. Bobby is passionate about training youth and teaching them the fundamentals of basketball. Outside of the sport, he enjoys making music mixes, playing basketball, swimming, biking, and hiking. His favorite food is steak and pasta, and his favorite movie is Superman: The Movie (1978). Above all, Bobby’s passion is to give love and support to others—not just through basketball, but by striving to be a good person and serving others in all aspects of life.
